Asian Games 2018 Schedule


Asian Games 2018 is just counting days to happen. This one of biggest sports events in Asia will take place in two cities in Indonesia, i.e. Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, and Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra Province, from August 18th to September 2nd 2018. Original Hosting Plan

The origin country which about to host this 18th Asian Games was Hanoi City in Vietnam as they have won the bid on 8th November 2012. However, their Prime Minister made an official announcement n 17th April 2014 about the withdrawal from hosting. It was due to the unpreparedness and economic recession.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) later considered their countries as Vietnam replacement to host the Asian Games, i.e. Indonesia, China and the United Arab Emirates. At first, Surabaya was the second candidate after Hanoi, but this city decided to drop their bid and focus on 2021 Asian Youth Games. Alternatively, the OCA chose Jakarta and Palembang.

Competition Schedule

The 2018 Asian Games event is officially scheduled from August 18th to September 2nd. There will be about 10,000 athletes from 45 countries to compete across 42 sports games. Among those competitions, there are 10 new ones like rock climbing, jiu-jitsu, pencak silat, sambo and jet skiing.

The event calendar has been broadcasted widely through the websites, including IGBS. But some sports are scheduled to be held earlier, like Basketball – 5x and Football from August 14th, while Handball is on August 13th.

Meanwhile, the OCA determined the opening and closing ceremony will be hosted by Jakarta. For your information, international k-pop girls generation is also invited to make a performance on August 18th while the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo will also give a speech.

Three Cute Mascots

There are three cute game’s mascots that officially represent the big event of 2018 Asian Games. They are:

• Bhin Bhin, a bird of paradise which symbolizes strategy
• Atung, a Bawean deer, represents speed
• Kaka, a single-horn rhinoceros that shows strength

They also wear traditional clothes from Papua, Jakarta and Palembang. Besides representing the three important of sporting values, i.e. strategy, speed and strength, those three mascots show the diversity and natural wealth of Indonesia.
