Bali Airport to Close for 24 Hours for Nyepi on Saturday

Bali, with their biggest population of Hindu people, celebrates a special holiday named Nyepi every year. It is the Hindu Day of Silence that comes this Saturday. Hindu people may not do any activity during the holiday, may not go out from home, no cooking, no watching TV, no phone calling and internet access or any other common daily activities. For this reason, Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport doesn’t operate during the silence day. It will be closed for 24 hours from any activity.

The Airport’s Closure Time 

The airport close will make impacts to minimally 238 international flights and 244 domestic flights.It will start from 6 am on Saturday, March 17 to the same time on the next day. The General Manager of Ngurah Rai Airport named Yanus Suprayogi explained that the airport closure will stop the entire services of the airport. The airport will back to operate on Sunday morning after 6 am.

Bali Airport commonly does the closure every year when Nyepi has come. It is according to their Transportation Directorate General of Transportation Ministry’s circular launched on the 1st of September 1999 that the airport stops the activities during the Day of Silence observance.

Coordination to All Airports and Airlines in the World

No flight will operate during the airport closure; both regular flights and charter flights, either from or into Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport. The notifications about the airport closure also have been in coordination with the operator and the Airnav Indonesia office of Air Navigation Firm in Denpasar. All connected airports and airlines in the world also have been notified about it.They communicate the plan intensively and all of the flights on the day have been rescheduled.

What about the Emergency Flights?

Even though the airport is closed and no flight operates on Nyepi, the airport’s authorities are still on alert and will allow any emergency flight’s landing at Ngurah Rai International Airport. There are 368 airport staffs that will work on Nyepi Silence Day and it is for the emergency landings, medical evacuation processes, and technical problems anticipation.
