You probably have heard about the officially opened (and new) airport in Beijing, Daxing Airport, that becomes the global talk because of its massive size. Not only the size becomes the topic of conversation, but the unique design has become everyone’s talk. If you want to know more about the new airport, let’s learn some interesting facts about it, shall we?
The Huge Airport
With a size of 18 square miles (or around 47 square kilometers), which is similar to half Hong Kong Island, the airport is huge. The main terminal alone takes around 7.5 million square feet, which makes it the biggest airport in the whole wide world. Because of the size, it is predicted (and claimed) that Daxing can handle 45 million people by 2021 and around 72 million people by 2025. In 2040, it is predicted that they can handle 100 million people – and accommodate 4 tons of cargo.
The airport will start operating with 4 runways although they are planning to make 7. The initial capacity alone can handle 300 landings and takeoffs within an hour. Quite an impressive number, don’t you think?
The airport is situated on the border of Langfang and Beijing, and it is officially the second international airport in Beijing. The shape and construction is unique – if you see it from above, it looks like a giant starfish. The terminal will be a single structure terminal – but it is going to be the biggest one in the world. Covering an area of 11,000,000 square feet, this is definitely the largest terminal ever existed, right? Daxing Airport is going to serve Hebei, Tianjin, and Beijing.
The Operational Fleets
Daxing Airport just opened last Wednesday, on September the 25th 2019 and open for public on the 26th. As it is a new airport, the number of (daily) flights is still limited. Plus, there are still limited air carriers found here. Major Chinese carriers, like China United, China Eastern, Air China, and China Southern airlines, can be found now. It is expected that more and more fleets will join.
It is claimed that more fleets will join the airport starting from October the 27th. Such airlines like Hebei Airlines, Himalaya Airlines, British Airways, and Juneyao Airlines will join. Other fleets that soon follow are Royal Brunei Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Finnair.
To make the airport is easily accessed and reached, transportation link is crucial. It is a good thing that the local government has thought about it carefully. In fact, transportation to Daxing Airport is said to be affordable and effective. For now, there are 4 ways to go to and from the airport: by taxi, by bus, by subway, or by the intercity railway.
You can always use the new intercity railway Beijing-Xiong’an connecting the airport to the city center (of Beijing) in only 20 minutes. The fare is set at around $3.4 or 24 RMB. If you prefer the subway, feel free to use it. The line will also take you to Beijing in 19 minutes – and you can pay for $4.8 or €4.4 or 35 RMB a person.
If you are traveling with kids or with several people, and you are carrying tons of luggage, then you should pick the taxi. It is more expensive but it is definitely the most comfortable and convenient means of transportation. Expect to pay $23 or 165 RMB. If you want to use the bus, go ahead. The bus lines for Daxing Airport are already available although the details are still unknown.
