The primary airport serving the greater Jakarta area is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, located on the Indonesian island of Java.

Soekarno, Indonesia’s first president, and Mohammad Hatta, his first vice president, were honored by having the airport named in their honor. Indonesians frequently refer to the airport as Cengkareng.

The Cengkareng area, a neighborhood to the northwest of the city, is where the airport’s IATA code, CGK, comes from. It is approximately 20 kilometers from Jakarta.

In 1985, Soekarno-Hatta Airport opened for business, taking over the defunct Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in East Jakarta and Kemayoran Airport (for domestic flights) in Central Jakarta.

As of later, Kemayoran Airport was closed. The Halim Perdanakusuma is still in use, primarily for charter and military flights.

The airport’s grounds span 18 km2 of land. Two cross taxiways connect the two distinct, parallel runways, which are 2,400 meters apart.
