Tower of Yasaka

hokanji temple - Yasaka Shrine

Also known as the Tower of Yasaka (Yasaka no to), Hokanji Temple is one of the landmarks in Kyoto, located in Higashiyama District –one of the most historical spots in Kyoto. This is a perfect example of how traditional and modern aspect can mix together, creating its own unique feel. The district is known for the cobbled alley street that remains the same from the old Kyoto period. Some of the houses and residences have been transformed into modern constructions – blending the old and the new. And if you go down the street, you will finally see the temple – right in the middle of the street.

Hokanji Temple was built in the 6th century and it is now coming in the form of five-story pagoda. Does it look interesting and unique? You can bet on it! There are some periods when visitors can gain access to the interior part of the temple – but such an opportunity can be quite rare. When you can get the access, you can go to the second story and feast on Kyoto’s skyline and view.

Hokanji Temple is 46 meters in height with sloping and graceful roofs within each tier. The location is situated right in between Yasaka-Jinja Shrine and Kiyomizu-Dera Temple. Visitors can enjoy the statues, architecture, and also fading paintings. Generally, you only need 30 minutes to view the temple.

The Operational Hour

You will have to pay ¥400 per person for the entrance fee. Under elementary school age is free. The temple opens from 10 AM to 4 PM on a daily basis. There is no exact schedule or date for the closing. So, if there is no announcement about the closing, the temple will remain open.
