If you have a very long layover time at Guangzhou International Airport and you want to know whether you have enough time to explore the close-by areas. The best way to spend the time is to go to Guangzhou because there are a lot of attractive spots and places to visit. However, there are several things to consider before you set off for your journey to the city center.
Planning the Exploration
Go to Guangzhou if you have at least 6 hours to wait – even more, it is better. If you have less than 6 hours, it would be logical to stay inside. You can at least sleep if you aren’t interested in exploring the airport. You need to give yourself at least 3 hours to go through security and airport check-in. To go to the city, it takes 40 minutes by Metro and it only costs 7 RMB per person.
If you want to get an interesting photo background for your travel, the pedestrian streets would be the ideal option. The street was a road back then in ancient times. There are still underground archaeological sites (two of them) that you can find there. The sites have been there for a thousand years. Besides them, you can also find local shops. But basically, this area is for tourists – they can shop, explore around, and be interested in splurging their money. If you are lucky, you can even get a special sale during holidays or weekends.
From the airport, you need to take Line 3 Metro. Get off at Jiahewanggang Station and transfer at Line 2.Get off at Gongyuanqian Station, take Exit C, and walk for 5 minutes to reach the area. It takes 33 minutes and 7 RMB.
The island played a crucial role in the city’s foreign trade from the Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Foreigners lived on the island in the 19th century as well as doing business. If you want to see European influence, in the architecture of the churches, villas, houses, and even the tennis courts, head there. You can take Line 3 Metro and follow the previous instructions. After you transfer to Line 2, stop at Gongyuanqian Station to transfer at Line 1.Go to Huangsha Station, take Exit D, and walk to the pedestrian bridge. Once you do it, you will reach the island. It takes 46 minutes for the whole trip and also 8 RMB.
Chen Clan Academy
Also known as Chen Ancestral Hall, the place is situated at the western gate area of Guangzhou City. The place was built in 1888 to 1894 so it was old and unique. You can take a look at the handicrafts elements on the building, such as iron castings, brick carvings, ceramic sculptures, paintings, lime sculptures, stone carvings, and wood carvings.
To reach the area, go with Line 3. And then transfer to Line 2, just like the previous ways. However, after you arrive at Gongyuanqian Station, transfer to Line 1. Then get off at the Academy and take Exit D. It takes 40 minutes and 8 RMB.
Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street
It’s similar to Beijing Road where you can enjoy the surrounding area and the shopping chances. You can find this street in Liwan District. Enjoy your shopping spree experience as well as the old architectural style reflected from the buildings.
Just like before, take Line 3, transfer to Line 2, and then make another transfer to Line 1. Then stop at Changshou Lu Station, take the Exit D1, and turn right. There will be a signal board about going to the Holiday Inn Shifu Hotel. Walk along and you will find a McDonald’s. Turn left. You have arrived at Di Shi Fu Road, which is next to the pedestrian street. The total time is 43 minutes with 8 RMB as the fare.
