About Trang Airport
For those wondering about Trang Province’s airport, rest assured, it does exist. Conveniently located at 170 Khok Lo, Tambon Khok Lo, Amphoe Mueang Trang, Trang Province, Southern Thailand, it’s just a short 10–20-minute drive from downtown.
Trang Airport code is TST, mainly serving Trang Province and its neighboring islands. So, if you want to visit Mueang Trang, Kantang, Yan Ta Khao, Palian, Sikao, Huai Yot, Wang Wiset, Phi Phi Island, etc., you can book a flight to this airport.
The airport’s history is fascinating. Initially, it was a single airfield serving military needs, a relic from World War II. In 1941, Japan’s attempted invasion of Thailand led to the establishment of this airport. However, a diplomatic agreement prevented the invasion, and the airfield was repurposed for commercial flights after the war.
Part of the deal is making airfields for Japanese soldiers so they can attack Malaya (now Malaysia) and Burma (now Myanmar). One of them is an airport in Trang, southern Thailand. Another part of the deal is that Japan will just pass by Thailand, not disarm Thailand’s soldiers, and not occupy the country.
After World War II ended, the government took over the airport and started serving commercial flights. Currently, there are only domestic flights to Bangkok with three different airlines: Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, and Thai Lion Air.
