History of Yoyogi Park

In 1910, before becoming a park, Yoyogi Park was Japan’s first powered airplane flight field. In the following decades, after the country’s military had become strong, the imperial army used the square to hold nationalist parades.

After Japan lost the war, the field was converted into military housing by US troops, called Washington Heights. Two decades after, the area was transformed once again to host the 1964 Olympics.

Visit Meiji-Jingu Shrine

Located right next to Yoyogi Tokyo, Meiji Jingu Shrine date back to 1920 is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Access to the shrine is easy, and it’s only a few minutes walk to the shrine entrance from JR Harajuku Station.

Although the shrine can be visited all year round, the path leading to the shrine is only open from sunrise to sunset, so it is best to visit this place in the morning.

Renovation work is currently underway at Meiji-jingu Shrine for its 100th anniversary in 2020. Until October 2019, some of the buildings will be renovated, but it shouldn’t cause any major disruption to enjoying the shrine’s beauty.
