Hindu Temple – Prambanan was build by the Mataram Kingdom as a masterpiece of Hindu Culture of the 9th century, located 17 kilometers from the city center.
History Of Hindu Temple Prambanan
Hindu Temple Prambanan is 5 meters higher than Borobudur. Prambanan temple soaring up to 47 meters. There are 3 main temples in the primary yard as a symbol of Trimurti in Hindu, namely : Vishnu, Brahma and with Shiva temple as a highest temple in the middle.
This Hindu Temple Prambanan was first built at the site around 850CE and to honour Lord Shiva and its original name was Shiva – grha (The House of Siva).
In the 9th century, the temple was largely abandoned after Mataram dynasty moved its court base to East Java.
When you entering the Shiva temple you will find four rooms. The Shiva statue as a main room and the other rooms contains of the statues of Durga (Shiva’s wife), Agastya (Shiva teacher) and Ganesha (Shiva’s son). And the Durga statue is said to be the statue of Roro Jonggrang.

A classic story tells, there was a beautiful princess whose name was Roro Jonggrang a daughter of Prabu Baka from Prambanan Kingdom. But Prabu Baka was killed by Bondowoso, a man from Pengging Kingdom. Bondowoso was famous with his power but he helped by the spirit of demon.
Roro Jonggrang felt sad due to the death of her father. Bondowoso was fell in love with her because of her beauty, but Roro Jonggrang does not love him so she refuse his love.
Bondowoso forced Roro Jonggrang to marry with him. Because of Roro Jonggrang was afraid to Bondowoso, she receive to gets married but with one requirement. Roro Jonggrang asked Bondowoso to make her 1000 temple in one night before the rooster crowded
Bondowoso fulfilled her request by asking help from demonic power. Approaching midnight, the work was nearly done and he and demonic had been finishing 999 temple. Roro Jonggrang was afraid and but she got an idea. She and women in palace pound rice in order to make that night look like morning day and they make a noisy sounds of grinding rice and the roosters crows.
The demonic was run to leave Bondowoso, because of they afraid to the light of morning. And Bondowoso got frustrated and try to build the last temple by himself without genies and demonic power. But morning was come and he does not finish the last temple.
Because of he felt cheated by Roro Jonggrang, he become angry, than he cursed Roro Jonggrang by said “I have build 999 temple, but you have cheated me and now, your are the thousandth temple” and by his word, the princess turned into statue. And now the people called that temple was Prambanan with Roro Jongrang as the statue.
